Getting Ready for Retirement

Retirement System members are responsibile to contact the Plan Administrator to schedule an appointment to apply for benefits when they become eligible. Application for benefits must be made no less than 30 and no greater than 90 days prior to the anticipated date of pension commencement.

Retirement System members may also forfeit their rights of benefit commencement by applying for and receiving a refund of personal contributions upon separation of membership/employment. Please contact the Plan Administrator for more information.

If a former full time employee and member of the defined benefit plan of the Offices of St. Clair County had 8 or more years of full time credited service prior to their separation of employment and the individual’s accumulated member contributions have not been refunded, then they would be considered a vested former member.   

A vested former member may retire upon attainment of age 55 if the vested former member has 25 or more years of credited service, or upon attainment of age 60 if the vested former member has fewer than 25 years of credited service.
