With the beautiful colors of fall behind us and snow starting to fly, what can we all do this winter to keep our waterways clean and healthy? We can be smart about salt! Our winter chores have an impact on the ice melt and runoff coming from our properties. Salt applied to our driveways and sidewalks contribute to creek, ditch and stream pollution. These smaller waterways flow directly untreated to our larger rivers. Fifty pounds of salt, or one large bag, can pollute 10,000 gallons of water. Using less salt at home will help protect water quality in your neighborhood, and it will save money, too!
