Who is Eligible:
St. Clair County infants and children.
Services Offered:
- Vision Screenings: Conducted for preschool children (ages 3 to 5) and students in grades 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and during driver’s education.
- Hearing Screenings: Conducted for preschool children (ages 3 to 5) and students in kindergarten, grade 2, and grade 4.
- Follow-up Care: Additional testing is performed for any child who does not pass the initial screening.
- Special Requests: Teachers, health care providers, or parents may request screenings through the health department.
The Hearing and Vision programs were first legislated in 1949. Michigan’s Public Health Code requires screenings during the preschool years (ages 3 to 5) and again prior to entering kindergarten.
Who Pays:
There is no charge for vision and hearing screening for children.
Scheduling and Appointments:
Appointments for children ages 3 to 5 are available at the health department during regular business hours and when technicians are available.
