The Library Technician performs responsible sub-professional technical library duties as well as public service. The Library Technician performs complex technical duties of a limited professional nature. These duties typically do not require the application of academic training in library principles and procedures at the full professional level. The Library Technician classification is distinguished from Library Branch Assistants or Clerks in that it has a greater level of responsibility, complexity of duties assigned, and latitude in decision-making.


·         Responsible for a major function in an assigned library service.

·         Receives oral or written instructions from supervisor, organizes work according to established procedures and reports work accomplished to supervisor.

·         Guides and trains clerical staff or Library Branch Assistant’s in tasks for assigned service.

·         Assists Technical Services and Community Relations departments with various tasks and projects, as directed.

·         Performs a variety of technical and clerical duties related to the ordering, receiving, cataloging, processing, and maintenance of materials, both physical and digital, for the Library's collection.

·         Monitors, orders and receives office supplies for assigned service.

·         Assists in resolving customer service issues and responding to the public in a courteous and tactful manner.

·         Establishes and maintains accurate records and files.

·         Participate on assigned special projects.

·         Operates integrated library system.

·         Assists in developing procedures for assigned service.

·         Operates standard office equipment.

·         Provides customer service to patrons in library and over the phone and via email, including basic reference advisory service using a variety of search tools or refers inquiries to reference librarian.

·         Assists public and library staff and troubleshoots basic technology issues and equipment.

·         Monitors and troubleshoots automated materials handling system and check-out machines.

·         May interpret library policies in assigned area to library staff and public.

·         Participates in meetings, committees, webinars and workshops.

·         Upon assignment a library technician may be given responsibility, with oversight by the librarian assigned to that area, for some of the operations in any of the following library areas: interlibrary loan service; marketing; government documents; serials; Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped; community outreach; historical, law and business collections; programming and processing of materials.

·         Other duties as assigned.


Works under the general direction and supervision of the Public Service Coordinator or ITC Coordinator who issue assignments and instructions but has some latitude for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative.


Oversight is exercised over library pages in the absence of the department lead.



·         Graduation from an accredited high school graduate or equivalent with some college course work and five years of library experience.


·         Associate’s degree with three years of related experience.


·         Bachelor’s degree with one year of related experience.

·         The qualified candidate must obtain appropriate Library of Michigan certification within first year of employment.

  • Knowledge of Integrated library systems and automatic material handling systems
  • Knowledge of Library functions including circulation, reference, administration and technical services.
  • Writing, reading, mathematical principles; proficient computer skills-Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook; exercise sound judgment and decision making in accordance with policies and procedures; ability to research and problem solve independently; knowledge of County operations and functions; ability to prioritize and time manage; handle stressful situations, provide effective and friendly customer service; support the County's mission and values; ability to think critically where necessary.
  • Knowledge or understanding of basic administrative tasks: operate standard office equipment; document management; prepare and maintain records, various correspondences and reports; answer general inquiries and refer as necessary; answer telephone calls, process mail, order supplies/equipment; prepare meeting agendas, attend meetings, record/transcribe/distribute minutes; entering, transcribing, recording, storing or maintaining information in written or electronic form with speed and accuracy; maintain calendars, arrange meetings, schedule rooms and equipment as necessary.    

·         Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with management, co-workers and clients; obtain and communicate accurate information; apply common sense understanding to complex instructions and respond accordingly;  communicate complex ideas through graphs, charts, presentations, reports or other professional correspondence.

  • Ability to demonstrate predictable, reliable, and timely attendance.                
  • Ability to read, write & communicate in English; follow written and verbal instruction and understand basic mathematics and figure checking.              
  • Ability to interpret and apply procedures, rules, technical information, instructions, manuals to complete tasks accurately and on schedule.

  • Ability to use discretion and maintain sensitive and confidential information.     
  • Ability to work independently or part of a team; ability to interact appropriately with others such as County officials, employees, vendors and the general public.

  • Adaptability to change in the work environment, managing competing demands and ability to deal with frequent changes, delays or unexpected events.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services including customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction

·         Proficient skills using Microsoft Office programs including, but not limited to: Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook required.  Proficiency may be tested.


  • Prior to starting employment, the candidate must complete a satisfactory background check.  The background check is understood to encompass all forms of pre-employment screening, including but not limited to: drug screen, physical, criminal background, driving record, sex offender registry, education, training and licensing verification, employment history, credit check, and professional and personal references.
  • Must possess a valid State of Michigan operator license and maintain this license throughout employment in this position.

·         Must obtain a Level III Certification through the Library of Michigan within the first year of employment.
