Title: Digital Services Librarian

This position guides content development, ensures continuity of the organizational brand, and manages the library’s online presence in order to effectively promote and provide user-friendly access to the library’s resources and services.  Works at reference service stations as a regular part of the night/weekend rotation schedule and as assigned.


·         Creates and curates active content for the website, social, and traditional media.

·         Collaborates with other staff librarians to envision, create, and promote professional library services in an on-line environment.

·         Develops and maintains community resource guides for the library website.

·         Collaborates with the ITC Coordinator and Tech Services personnel as needed.

·         Identifies and suggests opportunities for on-line service improvements focusing on improved customer service, usability, and technical efficiency.

·         Adopts and ensures uniform library brand consistency through improved on-line and traditional graphics and media.

·         Identifies current technological trends and suggests usage for library on-line needs.

·         Participates in planning, implementation, and identifying new opportunities and technologies to enhance outreach and increase awareness of library’s website and services.

·         Serves as an integral part of the website committee.

·         Creates library marketing materials such as progress reports, newsletters and other library publications.

·         Works with vendors to negotiate fair pricing for library marketing and merchandising.

·         Maintains frequent social media presence on multiple platforms by providing relevant content and patron response in a timely manner.

·         Processes and prioritizes system-wide marketing request forms.

·         Generates and distributes press releases.

·         Oversees online event calendar.

·         Supports branches and participates in system-wide library outreach opportunities.

·         Responds to eBook customer support issues.

·         Assists patrons at reference desk in using library materials and services.

·         Assists patrons with e-readers and eBook downloading.

·         Elicits and interprets information requests in person and by telephone.

·         Instructs and assists patrons in using the online catalog and in making effective use of the Library’s collections.

·         Directs patrons to sources of information.

·         Assists patrons in research.

·         Provides reader’s advisory services.

·         Develops and maintains the general collection for assigned classification areas.

·         Trains staff as needed in relevant areas.

·         Participates in team meetings, training and other professional development opportunities.

·         Checks and responds to email regularly.

·         Other duties as assigned.


Work is performed under the general supervision of the Community Relations and Friends Development Coordinator, Director or other designated person.


May coordinate daily activities of Main Library clerical staff, pages, and volunteers assigned to area and monitor associated daily work.


·         Master’s Degree in information or library science from an American Library Association accredited school.

·         Minimum of 2 years public library experience.

·         Solid experience with traditional and electronic media including, but not limited to, websites and social/print media with a demonstrated knowledge of graphic design and photo editing software.

·         A thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of modern library operation.

·         A familiarity with Horizon or other ILS.

·         Writing, reading, mathematical principles; proficient computer skills-Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook; exercise sound judgment and decision making in accordance with policies and procedures; ability to research and problem solve independently; knowledge of County operations and functions; ability to prioritize and time manage; handle stressful situations, provide effective and friendly customer service; support the County's mission and values; ability to think critically where necessary.

·         Knowledge or understanding of basic administrative tasks: operate standard office equipment; document management; prepare and maintain records, various correspondences and reports; answer general inquiries and refer as necessary; answer telephone calls, process mail, order supplies/equipment; prepare meeting agendas, attend meetings, record/transcribe/distribute minutes; entering, transcribing, recording, storing or maintaining information in written or electronic form with speed and accuracy; maintain calendars, arrange meetings, schedule rooms and equipment as necessary.

·         Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with management, co-workers and clients; obtain and communicate accurate information; apply common sense understanding to complex instructions and respond accordingly;  communicate complex ideas through graphs, charts, presentations, reports or other professional correspondence.



·         Ability to demonstrate predictable, reliable, and timely attendance.

·         Ability to read, write & communicate in English; follow written and verbal instruction and understand basic mathematics and figure checking.

·         Ability to interpret and apply procedures, rules, technical information, instructions, manuals to complete tasks accurately and on schedule.

·         Ability to learn from directions, observations, and mistakes; and apply procedures using good judgment.

·         Ability to use discretion and maintain sensitive and confidential information.

·         Ability to work independently or part of a team; ability to interact appropriately with others such as County officials, employees, vendors and the general public.

·         Ability to work under supervision, receiving instructions/feedback, coaching/counseling and/or action/discipline.

·         Adaptability to change in the work environment, managing competing demands and ability to deal with frequent changes, delays or unexpected events.

·         Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services including customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction

·         Proficient skills using Microsoft Office programs including, but not limited to: Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook required.  Proficiency may be tested.

  • Prior to starting employment, the candidate must complete a satisfactory background check.  The background check is understood to encompass all forms of pre-employment screening, including but not limited to: drug screen, physical, criminal background, driving record, sex offender registry, education, training and licensing verification, employment history, credit check, and professional and personal references.
  • Must possess a valid State of Michigan operator license and maintain this license throughout employment in this position.

·         Must obtain a Level III Certification through the Library of Michigan within the first year of employment.
